Venatius Ikem

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Barrister Venatius Ikem, has resigned from the party.

Barr. Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the National Secretary of the PDP at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja and the State Secretary of the party in Cross River State.

In the letter, Ikem said the decision followed what he described as “deep introspection” and careful reflection on the current realities within the PDP.

He cited growing internal dynamics, divergent positions and what he described as a “crisis of direction and leadership coherence” as major factors behind his decision.

According to him, the prevailing circumstances had made it increasingly difficult for him to effectively reconcile his responsibilities as state chairman with the direction of the party.

“I can no longer effectively serve in this position under circumstances that increasingly challenge the principles, cohesion, and sense of purpose that should define our collective efforts,” he stated.

Ikem who served for five years also said the timing was particularly significant as the party enters a critical electoral season.

He expressed concern that internal divisions could weaken the PDP’s ability to pursue what he called “a clear and united course.”

The former chairman warned that if the challenges were not addressed, they could undermine the sacrifices, investments and aspirations of loyal party members who had worked for the success of the PDP.

Despite his resignation, Ikem expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as chairman for half a decade.

He specifically thanked Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe for their support and encouragement during difficult periods of his political career.

The Obudu-born politician acknowledged the contribution of Nigeria’s Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he referred to as the party’s National Leader, describing his role in the party’s collective efforts as “indelible and worthy of recognition.”

Venatius thanked his supporters across Cross River State, particularly the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for what he described as their unwavering faith, loyalty and commitment.

Explaining his decision to leave office, he opined that leadership sometimes requires reassessment and renewal.

He said he had reached a point where he believed “a clearer vision and a new pathway are necessary”, both for himself and those who had entrusted him with their confidence.

However, the resignation letter does not state that he is leaving the PDP. Rather, he stated that he remained committed to the progress, stability and development of Cross River State and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours, especially in the 2027 general elections.
