The Cross River State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Kingsley Egumi, has warned traffic officers against extortion and abuse of power.
He gave the warning in Calabar during the flag-off of the Ember Month Sensitization Campaign by TRAMRA. The theme of the campaign is “Repositioning for Excellence” and “Stay Alive, Don’t Rush to the Grave.”
Egumi said traffic management is about protecting lives, not just controlling vehicles. He told officers to be professional, fair, and respectful to road users.
He said Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) were returned to the roads after public complaints, to restore order and ensure vehicles are roadworthy, warning that government will not tolerate extortion or intimidation.
The Commissioner urged the officers to use modern technology to manage traffic and reduce accidents.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cross River State Sector Commande represented by Sup. Commander E. D. Ikpi, listed five principles for officers: professionalism, knowledge of traffic laws, proper dressing, awareness of their environment, and courtesy.
The Head of TRAMRA, Engr. Stanley Akam, said the two-day training will retrain officers to work better during the ember months when road activities increase.
