The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old security guard following an allegation of sexual assault involving a five-year-old pupil in Calabar.
The suspect, identified as Bright Bassey Elijah, was arrested after the incident was reported to the Police on Monday, September 28, 2026, by the proprietress of the school (school name withheld for security reasons).
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the suspect, who was attached to the school as a security guard, was allegedly caught taking the five-year-old pupil to an uncompleted building within the vicinity of the school, where the alleged sexual assault reportedly occurred.
ASP Eitokpah said the suspect is currently in Police custody as preliminary investigations continue. He added that the suspect would subsequently be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
“The Command is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves, particularly given the age of the alleged victim,” the Police spokesperson said, adding that appropriate investigative and child-protection procedures would be followed in accordance with the law.
The Police urged parents, guardians, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse or exploitation to the authorities.
The Command also cautioned members of the public against publishing or circulating the identity, photographs or other information that could reveal the identity of the alleged victim, stressing the need to protect the child’s privacy and welfare.
The police assured that the investigation would be conducted professionally and in accordance with due process.
