“Even in the Bible, God commanded that we should get our wages after work. Even God rewards only the work we have done unless there is Grace; that is why God said, I will bless the work of your hands; so you have to work first before the blessing. We are in the age of grace under Governor Ayade. This is pure Grace. It is only under grace that you get paid when you have not worked. It is only workers that will understand this. Go and tell the rest of Nigeria that Cross River workers are under the period of grace because of governor Ayade.”

-Madam Eunice Eyamhe

That was the exclamation of Madam Eunice Eyamhe, a civil servant in Cross River state to this reporter in reaction to the payment of the salaries of civil servants for the month of May 2016 on the first day of the month.

Reports from the venue of the May day celebration say, a mild drama immediately ensued when the workers who were at the U.J. Esuene Stadium for the May Day celebration each began to receive salary payment alert from their various banks.

Unable to contain the excitement, shouts of ‘alert alert alert rent the stadium as the workers went into a frenzy, singing the praises of the governor.”

Before now, the governor had paid salaries between the 13th and 20th day of each month.

Ayade told the workers, who named him the Best Labor Friendly Governor in Nigeria, that his administration had a duty to give workers in the state a sense of dignity.

“We must create opportunities for labor to feel a sense of dignity. If you are truly a Christian, you must know that as you care for your kids, you must care for labor,” he stated.

He said this is because “no infrastructure is more important than labor, which is why in all my programs, I focus on people.”

Urging Labor to keep faith with his administration while working in harmony to foster the growth of the state, the governor declared that no worker who has dully put in his honest labor will go unrewarded.

He reasoned that “anybody who pulls down labor does not understand the philosophy of existentialism, hence the need for labor to come before infrastructure and skyscrapers.”

Other packages the governor announced were the donation of a new Toyota coaster bus for labor, release of funds for the building of Labor house as well as the appointment of labor representative into the state executive council.

Earlier, the organized labor, through the State Chairman of the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC), Comrade John Ushie, had lent its support to the construction of the 260km Superhighway as well as other projects aimed at repositioning the economy of the state.

Ushie also urged government to intervene in a number of areas, including the State Newspaper Corporation, which he said is in a dilapidated state.

  • I don’t think what the Governor did is bad, that is why Madam Eunice said we are enjoying grace under the leadership of the Governor. moreover, any literate and reasonable worker has to work effectively based on this fact. I had an experience where a lady working under the state government of Cross River State refused to attend to me based on the fact that she has been paid her salary.. Based on this, I think the Governor has done the right thing…….. WELDONE SIR@ Sen Ben Ayade…….

    • based on the fact that she was not paid her salary………………………….. CORRECTION OF THE LAST POST.

    • I strongly recommend that you PLEASE read up on the concept of (i) Time Value of Money, and (ii) Prof. Douglas McGregor of MIT’s Theory X and Theory Y. Your understanding of the topics will help you reason with me.

  • Madam Eunice Eyamhe is correct, “we should get our wages after work.”

I abhor the payment of salaries to workers before they perform the services that they are being paid for. It is wrong to pay workers early or late salary for several reasons.

Firstly, is the concept of time value of money which states that a naira today is worth more than a naira tomorrow. So, by pre-paying workers’ salary, the government is missing out on the opportunity to earn interest if the money would have been invested. In fact, in developed countries, salary for the preceding two weeks’ of work is paid two weeks henceforth.

Another reason why early payment of salary is bad is that the state is going to suffer from Theory X workers who having received their salaries will be more inclined not to work at the required productivity level.

The government should invest our public money and only use it to pay workers when it is statutory required. The interest accrued from investment can be used to upgrade our dilapidated primary school buildings where our future leaders are being educated.

  • Patricks Egere

Are the staff of CRGIA not Cross Riverians? Was he imposed on the State just for the purpose of salaries? Let him get on and start implementation of his laughable 2016 budget.

  • Somebody placed an “Advertorial” on this webpage announcing the “public display” of the EIA of the proposed superhighway. Unfortunately, some part of the “advertorial” was cutoff and there is nowhere that I can get a copy including the Federal Ministry of Environment website!

Could you please post the entire advertorial in the CrossRiverWatch for use by your esteemed readers? In fact, the entire copy (in PDF format, of course) should be placed on the Internet for anybody to read and comment.

Public participation in this critical horizontal construction project will ensure the preservation of our much cherished environment.

EIA should have been completed and agreed to by all stakeholders PRIOR to commencement of construction! An obvious sign that our environmental policy is NOT working as it should!!!
