The Manchester United football club of England has condoled its fans and their families who were electrocuted Thursday night while watching a UEFA Europa football match between the club and Anderlecht at a viewing center.

“Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria, yesterday,” Manchester United tweeted.

The Secretary of the Nyaghasang Qua Clan in Calabar municipal where the incident took place, Iso Bassey Edim told CrossRiverWatch on phone that the clan is calling on relevant authorities to look into the matter with no official statement released yet.

Cross River Deputy Governor, Professor Ivara Esu visited the scene this morning and met with the clan head and some relatives of the victims and assured them of Government intervention on the matter.

The Governor, Senator Ben Ayade had earlier described the incidence as “horrifying” and “heart wrenching” and promised to investigate the matter to prevent future re-occurrence.

He is expected to cut short his trip itinerary in Geneva, Switzerland and return to Nigeria as soon as possible to meet with the families of the victims.

CrossRiverWatch had earlier reported that 7 had died with more than 23 sustaining, first, second and third degree burns after a transformer exploded causing a high tension cable to melt and drop on the makeshift viewing center constructed with mostly corrugated iron roofing sheets.
