The Cross River State Police command have launched an investigation following the death of a 14-year-old girl, Nancy Peter, who died after being subjected to multiple alleged beatings by her mother and a local pastor in Wula community, Boki Local Government Area of the state.
Confirming the incident in a press statement in Calabar, the Police Public Relations Officer ASP Sunday Eitokpah said the incident began when the victim’s mother, 45-year-old Agnes Peter, allegedly beat her daughter over accusations of theft.
Following the altercation, Mrs. Peter reportedly took the teenager to a local cleric, identified by police as 43-year-old Pastor Samson Roman Dago, who allegedly subjected the minor to severe corporal punishment using a horsewhip, locally known as a koboko.
ASP Sunday Eitokpah said “the victim reportedly became unconscious thereafter and was rushed to a medical facility in Wula Community for treatment, where she was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.”
Addressing rising speculation surrounding the case, the Police Command also responded to unverified reports circulating on social media that alleged the 14-year-old had been sexually assaulted prior to her death.
Police officials urged public patience, noting that while they are aware of the online claims, current evidence does not support them and investigations have not established any evidence to substantiate sexual assault claims.
The statement further confirmed that relevant medical examinations and forensic investigative procedures are currently ongoing to ascertain the facts.
The Command emphasized its commitment to a transparent and thorough investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy and determine the extent of involvement of all parties who are now under police net connected to the case.
While the investigation is ongoing, police assured the public that appropriate legal action will be taken against anyone found culpable based on the final outcome of the investigation.
