Facts emerged on Tuesday how Cross River State Police command averted fatalities on independence day in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital.
The headquarters of the Nigeria Police had placed all the major cities in the country on red alert following intelligence reports that terrorist groups were planning to bomb certain places in Nigeria.
Al Shabab, the terrorist group which bombed a shopping mall in Nairobi had mentioned Nigeria as one of their targets in Africa with a possible attack on the Independence Day celebration when scores would be victims.
CrossRiverWatch reliably gathered that Calabar which is relatively calm and peaceful was one of the targets of the terrorists with intention to take the security in the city by surprise.
Cross River State has been adjudged by the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Dikko Abubakar as the most peaceful State in Nigeria with low crime rate and extremely warmth and peaceful people.
The group wanted to change this status with their alleged planned attack.
A top Police source who strongly preferred anonymity told CrossRiverwatch that, “We have mapped out strategies to arrest some assailants today around the UJ Esuene Stadium, venue of the 53rd Independence Day Anniversary Celebrations.
“We had been briefed about two groups coming to launch attacks at around the stadium and the CP quickly ordered that the intelligence unit swing into action.
“If you look around the stadium yesterday you will agree with me that policemen with uniforms are not many. What the CP did was to plant the plain clothe Policemen within and around the stadium which is the intelligence part of the Police.
“They were lucky they didn’t come to enter our net, because right from Odukpani Junction, Airport and Marina Resort, Akpabuyo and Adiabo Beach, plain clothes police were on surveillance.
“Stop and search kitted Police patrol were also every where to sweep all the motor parks and mechanic garages in Calabar.
“They were however lucky because we were prepared for them, but may be they got the information on how prepared we were and still are for them.” Our reliable source in the Police said.
CrossRiverWatch had reported how the Police Commissioner, Mr. Kola Shodipo met with the Senior Officers of Cross River State Command at the Police Officer’s Mess along Moore Road Marina where the CP warned the officers against corruption and indiscipline.
Our source equally said the CP’s main intention of the meeting was to prepare the officers and men under them on the pending intelligence reports about a possible attack and how to strategize to arrest the group, but the group did not show up.
The anniversary was celebrated amidst Pomp and pageantry as all top government functionaries led by the governor Senator Liyel Imoke and his Wife, Obioma, Deputy Governor and his wife, Glory as well as all the Service Commanders including Police, Navy, Army, Airforce, Immigration, Customs, Civil Defence and Prisons attended the Independence Anniversary Celebrations.
