Rival gangs which were recently at war with each other in Obudu local government area of northern Cross River State have agreed on a ceasefire with the traditional rulers performing some rites to welcome them back into the society.
Those whom CrossRiverWatch had obtained their names as suspects in the issue are said to have been tired of hiding in the bush and called for a truce after which it was communicated to the traditional rulers and the vigilante group, a source in the Vigilante who did not want his name to be mentioned said.
They were fined a goat, some money and drinks which the chiefs used in performing the rites.
And, the chiefs, led by one Chief Ishoja commended their resolve to make peace and warned that the terms and conditions issued them should be strictly adhered to or they risk facing more sanctions.
Amongst the names obtained by CrossRiverWatch was one Monday Ogar who came out and denounced gangstar activities and denied being the leader of the Klans Konfraternity as alleged.
Also, one Akpanke Joseph said his gang, the Vikings confraternity has been doing wrong and stated that he was no longer interested in doing wrong as he was now a peacemaker.
In the Memorandum of Understanding signed, the gangstars affirmed that: “We shall not engage ourselves in any act of cultism anymore,” adding that if caught, they were willing to face the “full wrath of the law and the gods.”
The head of the reconciliation committee was Mr. Frank Agim. He also heads the vigilante group. And, he advised the gangstars to go closer to God by choosing a church that will preach to them.
Also, the community relations officer to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River in Obudu, Mr. Emmanuel Akwagiobe commended him for doing a good job.
