The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has extended a warm welcome to students after eight months strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
ASUU had on February 14, 2022, declared “total and comprehensive” strike and subsequently in August, an indefinite strike over the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demand. ASUU however, following various negotiations and two court orders, resolved to “conditionally” suspend the industrial action.
The UNICAL SUG President, Tyron Bassey expressed happiness over the decision and the subsequent return of students to campus.
In a release with reference No. UCC/SUG/001/022/040, the President urges new students to stay focused and “ensure to attend the orientation programs that would be conducted by different associations within the university,” adding that “these programs will create opportunity for the students to meet their leaders and also be acquainted with the university’s general rules and regulations and tips about life in general on campus, online registration, GSS, campaigns on zero tolerance for cultism, hate speeches, exams malpractice, and other social vices.”
He advised the returning students to “increase their speed so as to stay in line, reason that the academic calendar has been amended and the activities will be more tasking than in the past.”
His words: “To our new students, this is indeed a new opening for you to bask in your dreams of excelling in life. Do not be carried away by your individual hankers, because they might be the ground bait that will lure you into swallowing the hook. Ensure you attend the orientation programs that’d be conducted by different associations within the university.
“These programs will afford you the opportunity to meet your leaders and acquaint you with the university’s general rules and regulations including tips about life on campus, online registration, GSS, campaigns on zero tolerance for cultism, hate speeches, exams malpractice, and other social vices.”
He advised students of the institution to be good ambassadors.
