The State Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Cross River has thrown its weight behind the embattled Chairman, Alphonsus Eba Esq. amidst increasing calls for his resignation.
A statement issued Tuesday by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Erasmus Ekpang said the State Executive Committee in a meeting convened by the Deputy State Chairman, Prince Eka Williams said the committee noted that Eba led the party to “a 90 percent victory in the 2023 general elections within the two years of joining the APC and being saddled with the responsibility of leading the party.”
It described the call for his resignation by a stalwart, Chief Henry Onwe as, “ill-timed and without recourse to his sterling leadership and performance which has kept the party afloat.”
The APC lost all seats in the Yala Local Government Area where Mr. Eba hails from and out of the five elections conducted, won only in the Guber polls as the People’s Democratic Party won the Senate and House of Representatives elections while the Labor Party won the Presidential elections. The State House of Assembly seats in the Chairman’s constituency was also won by the Labor Party.
And, Mr. Onwe who shared results from several polling units in Echumofana ward, claimed that Mr. Eba did not perform credibly well, hence the call for his resignation.
But, the statement by Mr. Ekpang said, “The vote of confidence passed on him by the State’s Executive and Working Committee is not far-fetched because he is a strong voice of the party and has proven his unalloyed commitment to the wellbeing of the party, he was able to weather through various political storms the opposition posed, he has never been intimidated.”
The party sued for the support of its members and assured them of a “level playing ground,” while commending the Ward and Chapter Executive Committees for also passing a vote of confidence on Mr. Eba.
