If You Don’t Like, Go To Court… BY AGBA JALINGO

Every election cycle, Nigerians go to the polls to vote for:

President.

Vice President.

109 Senators.

360 House of Reps members.

36 Governors.

(36 Deputy Governors)

940 State Houses of Assembly members.

774 LGA Chairmen.

(774 Vice Chairmen)

8,806 Ward Councilors.

But since after the 1999 elections, it is the courts that have been selecting leaders for us.

After the 1999 general elections, there were only 2 litigations.

After the 2003 elections, there were 560 litigations.

After the 2007 elections, the number of litigations increased to 1,290.

The number of litigations dwindled after the 2011 elections to 732.

And after the 2015 elections, the number of litigations dwindled further to 560. Same figure after the 2003 elections.

And after the 2019 elections, the litigations rose again to 1,697.

Then in the 2023 elections, the number of litigations rose further to 1,996.

It appears the generosity of the courts to election riggers has further turned the courts to the preferred polling units, where elections are won.
