As the people of Cross River state join Christian World over to celebrate Christmas in grandstyle, the hope of the people of Bakassi Returnees living at Akwa Ikot Eyo-Edem in Akpabuyo Local Government Area to celebrate the season may have been dashed except some one come to their rescue.
When CrossRiverWatch visited the refugee camp on Friday,it was an expression of anger, hunger and annoyance displayed by the refugees who said they have been abandoned by the government who camped them in the village.
Speaking on their plan to celebrate Christmas, the Camp leader,Etim Ene said they have been neglected by the government that is supposed to feed and cater for their needs especially in this yuletide season.
Ene said they usually celebrate the annual Christmas in their former homes as a matter of necessity before the Cameroonian garnmdermes sacked them from the ceded oil rich Bakassi peninsula in March 2013.
How can we celebrate Christmas when we don’t even have anything to eat? Look around, all of us here are very sad, we have been neglected by government and the people who provide for us since we were moved here.
“It will be a very sad situation if every body celebrates Christmas in Calabar and over two thousand refugees here are looking for what to eat as our daily bread” he said.
Ene called on well meaning Nigerians to come to their aids as their is no hope of Christmas Celebration for the refugees.
Also Speaking, a fifteen year old young Ashisana Asuquo recounted her ordeal when they were moved out of their ancestral home in the oil rich pennisula .
Ashisana said they do celebrate Christmas in their former home in their little way but she had no hope this year.
