One Barrister James Etudo and one hundred and twenty four other corpses including an unidentified leg abandoned in the mortuary of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital are to be given mass burial by the hospital authorities within the next one week.
The hospital which conveyed the information to the public through an announcement in a local radio station, Cross River Broadcasting Corporation, CRBC, said the bodies some of which have been in the mortuary of the hospital since June 2008 have become an eye sore therefore impossible for the hospital to continue to keep them since those who deposited them have refused to come for them.
Sixty eight of the corpses including Barrister Etudo and one robbery suspect John Ita have name tags on them while forty four bodies and one leg have no names tags and those without names are suspected to be accident victims.
In a statement announced on the radio, Mrs. E. T. Solomon, the head corporate Affairs of the hospital said. “Unknown and unidentified corpses have been in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital mortuary for over six years and arrangement has been concluded for their evacuation and mass burial”.
She said the hospital’s management will not be held accountable for any corpse dumped in mass grave if “unevaluated after the period of the announcement”.
The announcement did not identify those who deposited the corpses but the corpse of Barrister Etudo who from his name is from Akwa Ibom State has been in the mortuary since the 1st of January 2011 and it is not known why his body was abandoned in the mortuary and now to be given mass burial.
“Most of the corpses which are unidentified are accident victims and were deposited here by some good Nigerians while those who have names were brought here by family members and neighbors and in any case if they are not taken away they would be given mass burial” told CrossRiverWatch on phone.
