The member representing Abi/Yakkur in the Federal House of Representatives, Honorable Bassey Eko Ewa, has said that the real event that happened on Saturday last week was not what was reported but attention was concentrated on a minor incident that happened between him and the Chief of Staff to Governor Imoke.
He said it was an occasion where he elected to give back to the people whom since the inception of the current democratic dispensation in 1999 have consistently kept faith with him by voting for him to represent them.
The items, worth over fifty million Naira included cash, cars, tricycles, motor cycles, welding machines and sewing machines.
According to Ewa, “These people have been my strength since 1999 when even as the least qualified amongst several people who sought for their backing voted for me to represent them in the House of Assembly and after eight years in the House of Assembly, they voted for me to go to the House of Representatives in Abuja”.
He said he is immensely appreciative of the confidence of the people in him and since he had tasted poverty in the past he is deeply concerned about the plight of the people and so decided to put together some items and cash that can help some of them out of poverty.
“Today, I am giving out ten cars, two hundred sewing machines, fifty three keke NAPEP, seventy motor cycles, seven welding machines, and cash to assist them stand on their own or have some measure of financial independence as they take care of their families”.
He said those selected cut across all the wards of the two local government areas that form his constituency, Abi and Yakkur and assured that more items would be given in future.
“The much I have given would go a long way in assisting the people pay school fees, meet some other needs and more would come in subsequent years so that more people can benefit.
Also speaking, the National Legal Adviser of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, , Chief Olusola Oke said the empowerment by Hon. Ewa was very purposeful and a sacrifice on his part to better the lot of his constituents. “Any member who carries out this kind of large scale empowerment means well for his people and a great sacrifice which needs to be commended”.
Chief Oke said the PDP was highly impressed by the action of Hon Ewa and assured that the party would continue to encourage him to do more for the people that he represents. “PDP is in love with people who ensure that the benefits of democracy reach the people they represent and all we can do as a party is to support such a person”.
Mr. Bolaji Anani, the National Financial Secretary of the PDP, who also served as the chairman of the occasion, said the lives of many would be transformed by the empowerment scheme and called on beneficiaries not to sell off the items given to them but ensure purposeful use of the items. “Make sure you do not sell what you are being given here today but use it well so that it would bring more money to you”.
