The 30th convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar held Saturday with over 13,000 graduands receiving first degrees, post graduate diplomas, master degrees, doctorate degrees and honorary doctorate degrees.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Zana Akpagu pegged the number of first degree graduands at a little over 11,000 and commended management, staff and students for the success recorded in the convocation ceremony which is the second in his barely one year old administration.
The Pro Chancellor, Dr. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu in what will be his last convocation address as Chairman of the present Governing Council said his dream of positioning UNICAL as a first class institution is on the right track with students in Pharmacy, Music and Engineering among those matriculated a few months ago.
He said the award of honorary degrees by UNICAL was a tough one as the awardees must have displayed practical nous in the field which he said is evident in the fact only 5 people have been awarded in his 4 years as Chairman of the Varsity’s Governing council.
Sokoto State Governor, Honorable Aminu Tambuwal was among those honored with doctorate degrees (honoris causa) with notable personalities including Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu and wife of Cross River Deputy Governor, Omotunde Ivara Esu among the roll call of dignitaries at the event.
