The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Zana Akpagu has approved the formation of a five member joint management and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) committee to look into all the issues surrounding deductions from staff salary to the contributory pension scheme.
Zana gave the approval Monday after a meeting with the interim Executive Council of SSANU, University of Calabar chapter where he pledged to accord them the full recognition as the authentic representatives of the union.
On overtime arrears, Professor Akpagu said that only ten (10) percent of the arrears were outstanding and promised that these will be cleared as soon as the Varsity’s finances improve.
He congratulated the interim EXCO and promised to work with them to address other issues of staff welfare.
Earlier, the Chairman of the interim EXCO, Mr. Richard Ita presented a list of the concerns of the union to the Vice Chancellor which include pension deduction, promotion implementation, overtime arrears and release of the 2017 appraisal forms for promotion.
