Residents of Amika-Utuk, Goldie, Etonko and its environs in Calabar South area of Cross River State have held a protest at the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) Calabar office over lack of power and over-billing.
The residents who numbered over fifty said they have not had a single minute of power in the last two months but have been given bills of over twelve thousand naira (N12, 000) for “darkness supplied.”
One of the residents who identified himself as Savior said that the lack of electricity in the area has increased criminal activities, as hoodlums have capitalized on the lack of power to rob residents of the area.”
After the protesters laid siege on the gate of the company for about 30 minutes, an Official of the company called three of the protesters to their office for possible resolution of the problem.
After about an hour of the meeting, the three representatives of the protesters gathered others together and informed them that the management of the company said they understand their plight, and the issue of power supply is not peculiar to their area. But they had promised that from the next day, they will start rationalizing the power in the area until the issue is finally resolved.
And as for the crazy bills, the management of the company stated that they will look into the matter, but for the main time, they shouldn’t pay the November bill.
In the space of two months this is the fifth protest by separate groups from Calabar South as recorded by our newsroom.
