As part of ongoing efforts to improve access to safe drinking water and practice of good sanitation and hygiene in Nigeria, the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) is supporting the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to mobilize the media & communities to advocate for improved WASH services to government at all levels.
UNICEF which has been supporting the Federal Government of Nigeria with funding from DFID and European Union to implement reforms of the water and sanitation sector across the country, has Cross River as one of the beneficiary of the interventions.
Consequently, a training will be holding in Calabar from 30th July to 5th of August 2018 involving mainstream media organizations, executive members of several local governments’ water, sanitation and hygiene associations who are representing communities and members of the Association of Cross River Online Journalists ACROJ.
The training is geared at getting the buy-in of the media to communicate the WASH targets in 2030 Agenda for Sustainablhe Development as a way of ensuring greater government responsiveness.
The training will also build capacities of communities to understand their water and sanitation rights, voice needs and bring their demands to the authorities while playing their own role of sustaining Open Defecation Free communities & maintaining existing rural water supply facilities per the water sector policy in Nigeria.
