Following the recent appointment LGA Caretaker Committees, Special Advisers and Assistants by the Cross River State Governor, Sen. Ben Ayade, the people of Akpet 1 in Biase Local Government Area has appealed to the Governor to consider the continuous relegation of it’s people in terms of appointment and participation in the administration of the State.
The appeal was contained in an open letter addressed to the State Governor signed by an indigen of the Committee, Enome J. Amatey, Esq, recently in Calabar.
The letter read in part “We commemorate with Your Excellency on the momentous successes attained during your time in office, we are constrained to make this representation in the light of the continuous marginalization of the people of Akpet 1 Biase Local Government Area in the numerous and abundant appointments made by the State Government from the 29th day of May, 2015 to date. It is public knowledge that this administration has made the highest number of appointments in our recent history; from an enlarged cabinet to numerous Boards, Special Advisers and Special Assistants. However, it would appear that there is a conspiracy to tactically exclude the good people of Akpet 1 from governance and thereby further taking the government far from the people”.
The letter further highlighted that out of the Caretaker Committee recently constituted to oversee the affairs of the Local Government, none came from Akpet 1 Saying “This is in spite of the fact that a community within the same Ward had three (3) people nominated into the said Committee”.
They community however expressed their worries as they claimed to be loyal to the party (PDP) and the government of Sen. Ben Ayade, thus:
“This is more worrisome because there is no basis for this marginalization as the people of Akpet 1cannot be found wanting in both competence and loyalty to the party and/or the Government. We have individuals as competent in Akpet 1 as they are in other communities in Biase Local Government Area. The people of Akpet 1 are also in the habit of voting massively for the Peoples Democratic Party and have contributed enormously to support all programs of Your Excellency’s administration. It is also pertinent to State here that the Akpet/Abini Ward has the highest number of registered voters in Biase Local Government Area and Akpet 1 has consistently provided the highest votes in the Ward in previous elections”.
The letter finally dotted by calling on Ayade to employ the instruments of his good office in line with his administration’s agenda of inclusiveness to look into the issue to ensure that the good people of Akpet 1 are carried along in governance.
