Sergeant Okoi Otu, Sergeant Vincent Ayade, and four others are currently in Police custody for allegedly stealing tiles from the Canadian University Obudu in Cross River State.
According to an insider, there had been several complaints about missing materials from the institute which led authorities to set a trap, and the thieves were caught last week.
“Before the 9th of March, 2022 we had put up a contact team of 10 Vigilante, they did surveillance day and night between the proposed Canadian University and the Cargo Airport.
“Our boys about 4pm on the 9th of March, 2022 trailed an ash car from the Canadian University to the town and intercepted the vehicle, one Sergeant Otu Okoi showed his ID that he is a Policeman and armed. There were tiles in the vehicle and since he was armed we asked them to continue their duty and let them go.
“A week later, on the 16th of March, 2022 at the same time they loaded another vehicle belonging to Sergeant Vincent Ayade, he has worked in Canadian University since last year and had been deployed to Ogoja, he usually returns every Wednesday to carry out the theft.
“Unfortunately he got to Ugwagon and his car broke down, Vincent called one IJ that he normally drops the stolen items in his house to help get a vehicle. The items were uploaded into a sienna and our boys were watching, they intercepted the sienna at ring road.
“The driver was arrested, IJ too was arrested and he confessed that they belong to Sergeant Vincent Ayade and Sergeant Okoi Otu. Vincent confessed that he and Otu had been in the business of stealing the tiles.”
Sixty-two cartoons of tiles have been recovered. The tiler, gateman, and another worker are also in custody for questioning.
