Police Exhumes Bodies Of 5 killed For Allegedly Being Witches In Cross River State

By Ogar Monday

The police in Cross River State on Tuesday, December 12, 2022, recovered the body of 5 persons who were beaten to death on the accusation of being witches by some youths from Ndong Nwong Community in Odukpani Local Government Area of the State.

The deceased are three women and two men – Iquo Edet Eyo, Michael Robert, Etim Ekpenyong Ekpo, Akang Eyo, and Atim Ekpo. They were allegedly tortured to extract confessional statements before they were murdered in gruesome ways following a kangaroo trial where their rights to fair hearing were violated.

The police who had earlier arrested some suspects connected to the incident said their investigation had uncovered where the victims were buried in an unmarked grave deep inside the community forest.

Speaking on the discovery, SP Irene Ugbo, the State Public Relations Officer, thanked members of the public for their support and assured the family and the general public that the police will do all within its powers to ensure that justice is served.

The police spokesperson had earlier described the incident as “barbaric, and unacceptable” and that the police “will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the arrested suspects faced the full weight of the law.”

On his part, human rights activist Barrister James Ibor praised the police for taking the investigation to the stage of exhuming the corpses after arresting the suspected culprit.

Ibor insisted that the practice of witchcraft branding should forever be buried and put to an end, with perpetrators dealt with.
