By Mary Bassey, House of Assembly Correspondent

The leadership of the Cross River State House of Assembly has visited an erosion site at Bacoco, Nasarawa Community in 8 Miles, Calabar.

The visit was due to the motion adopted during the plenary held at the House of Assembly Chamber by Hon. Stanley Nsemo, a member representing Calabar Municipal State Constituency, calling on the state government to urgently intervene in the erosion site at Bacoco, Nasarawa  Community.

The Lawmakers unanimously adopted the resolution and called on the State Government to liaise with relevant agencies to control the erosion and repair the road.

Honorable Nsemo informed the House: “Nasarawa in my Constituency is almost cut off from the rest of the town as a result of gully erosion which has affected the only road leading to the community.”

He continued: “Heavy rains in recent times have worsened the situation and remedial measures need to be put in place to avoid the total collapse of the road.”

The Lawmakers noted that the area is predominantly a Hausa settlement where a lot of commercial activities are carried out. They added that if the road collapses it will affect the economy of the State.

After the plenary, the Speaker, Hon. Elvert Ayambem, and his Deputy Honorable Sylvester Agabi led members on a visit to the erosion site where he met with some leaders of the community and assured them of the government’s intervention.

Addressing Journalists after inspecting the erosion site, the Speaker expressed dismay at the deplorable state of the road.

He reiterated the urgent need for control measures to be taken to avoid a complete collapse of the road.
