The Cross River State 10th Assembly has passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Rt Hon. Elvert Ayambem, a member representing Ikom 2 State Constituency.
The vote of confidence was passed in a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Sylvester Agabi on behalf of the Lawmakers at the Assembly Chamber during a plenary held Wednesday, 26 July, 2023.
Agabi pointed out that within the 33 days in office, the 10th Assembly has successfully passed over ten (10) motions, taken about five (5) Matters of Public Interest, and carried out oversight functions on several sectors adding that some bills have passed second reading.
He attributed these successes to the able leadership of the Speaker whom he described as the “people’s Speaker”.
The motion was seconded by the Deputy Leader of the House and member representing Abi State Constituency, Hon. Davies Etta who also extolled the qualities of the Speaker.
In reaction, the Speaker appreciated his colleagues for their vote of confidence. He reiterated that his emergence as Speaker was an act of God and promised to lead the Assembly with love and commitment.
His words: “It is by God’s instrumentality that I am where I am today. I intend to lead the 10th Assembly with love, not vendetta. I will ensure that we live as a family even though we belong to different political parties,” he said.
The Speaker further sued for cooperation from the members to enable the 10th Assembly provide effective legislation to Cross Riverians.
This might be from the controversies that have trailed the Speaker’s and 565 other students withdrawal by management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
