The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has reiterated its resolve to halt post-examination celebrations by final-year students which usually involve reckless driving and the display of colors suspected to be regalia of gangsters.
These were contained in a memo to all members of the Varsity community issued on Monday and signed by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Gabriel Egbe who reminded staff, students, and others of a January 10, 2023, circular announcing the ban.
“The attention of Management has again been drawn to another ugly, rowdy, and disorderly scene where students were sighted in their numbers flying strange colors suspected to be secret cult regalia, while others were seen driving recklessly (presumably under the influence of alcohol and drugs) in and around the University premises,” the memo read.
“These lawless and dangerous acts being perpetuated by these students in the guise of celebrating their graduation does not portray our University in a good light as our students are well known for decency, having been thoroughly trained in character and learning,” management argued.
The Varsity’s management posited that these acts “pose a grave danger to other students and members of the university community,” and reiterated the ban on such activities.
All motorists are “once again, advised to always observe a speed limit of 40 Kilometers per hour while driving on Campus,” the memo read.
“The Chief Security Officer is, by this memo, directed to strictly enforce the letters of this circular and to impound any vehicle that goes against this directive.”
