A group of solicitors under the auspices of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Alumni Association, has written officially to the instruction’s Governing Council, requesting for some key records from the institution under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 2011.
The request was contained in a letter jointly signed by Romeo Lawrence Ojong Esq and Miller Lawrence Ojong Esq, dated April 30th, 2024 and obtained by CrossRiverWatch, in Calabar.
According to the letter, the group seeks details covering both financial and non-financial records; allowances, contracts and budgets and other records from the State University between 2022 to April, 2024.
The letter reads in parts: “We hereby request your office to produce the following public records: records of number of sittings and sub-committees meetings held by the Governing Council between January, 2022 to April, 2024.
“Records of allowances and amount paid to members of the UNICROSS Governing Council between January, 2022 to April, 2024; complete list, details and status of contracts (TETFUND inclusive) awarded by UNICROSS Governing Council between March, 2022 to April, 2024.
“The Procurement Plan within its approval threshold for the year 2022 to 2024 (conclusive or inconclusive); approved budget of the university from 2022 to 2024; annual reports between 2022 to 2024.”
The group urges the institution to comply with the FOI request, and expressed their readiness to explore other legal means to obtain the documents if the university turns down their request.
