The Nigerian Police Force is the primary law enforcement agency in Nigeria today.

Its history is traceable to the establishment of a Police constabulary in present day Lagos in the 1820’s by the British colonialists.

It has grown over the centuries to about 400,000 in its rank and file today with presence in all 678 Local Government Areas across the 36 States and the six council areas of the Federal Capital Territory.

From its history of enforcing law and order for the colonialists until date, the Police has found itself always at cross points following allegations of corruption, extortion, extrajudicial killings amongst others which has led to thousands of Fundamental Right Enforcement Procedures being initiated against the Force despite continuous reforms.

As the condemnations abound, so also, have the commendations from tens of thousands of families.

These, experts say, lie in the fact that the Police interact in different ways with the civilian population.

How has this been? And, how can it be improved?

This interaction and more form the basis of this week’s ‘The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo’ with the topic; “Towards An Improved Police – Civilian Relationship.”

The guests for these and more are the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, SP Irene Ugbo, the Capoon, Jokaina Deck of the National Association of Seadogs, Fidel Udie represented by the 2nd Vice President, Lawrence Achuta Esq, and the Country Director, International Training and Research Project, INTRAP, Dr. MacFarlan Ejah.
