The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government of Nigeria, twenty one days ultimatum to honor its 2009 renegotiated agreements or face nationwide strike.
ASUU disclosed this after its National Executive Council meeting held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
The Union said it is imperative to issue the notice as it is a requirement under the Labour law. Hence, they ought to explore all dialogue mechanisms before downing tools.
ASUU over time has threatened to withdraw her services over the non implementation of the agreement reached with the federal government.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had on June 26, 2024 invited the Union to a meeting to deliberate on the issue affecting the universities and to mitigate the planned strike.
According to the national President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the agreements that were reached have not been actualized.
The ASUU President stated that some of the demands include the non implementation of the 2009 renegotiated agreements that have tarried for over six years. The academic allowance which has also accumulated for over six years without implementation.
“Since 2013, only one has been paid, stating that they need a renewal of funds to upgrade the universities standard so that they can have students and lecturers from other countries,” Osodeke said. Adding that FG is yet to stop the expansion of universities which are approved with funds to run.
