The victims of the 2020 #EndSARS protests in Calabar and other parts of Cross River have cried out for compensation nearly four years after their properties and businesses were vandalized.
Counsel to the victims, Barrister Ituen Ukpono, has written to the government, highlighting their clients’ plight.
“The hope and aspirations of many homes and families who depend on private businesses, particularly shops and supermarket owners and poultry farmers, were shattered,” Ukpono stated.
Despite a Senate Joint Committee’s recommendation for compensation, published on February 1, 2022, the victims remain unpaid.
“We urge you to use your good office to cause compensation to be meted out to our clients to ameliorate their sufferings,” Ukpono appealed.
The #EndSARS protests, sparked by police brutality and other human rights abuses, resulted in widespread destruction and loss of livelihoods.
The lawyer affirmed that the affected individuals and families continue to struggle, seeking justice and support.
