The Zone 6 Command of the Nigerian Police Force, has said that JoePaul Obi, a journalist and broadcaster is in its custody following a petition against him over alleged issues of fraudulent transactions and a court order.

A statement issued by the Zonal spokesman of the force, SP Nelson Okpabi, on Friday in Calabar, with reference number, No. CZ: 5300/ZPC.6/ZPRO/VOL.4/73 said Mr. Obi is being held following a Court order.

“Mr. Osowo is currently in lawful custody at the Zone 6 Police facility following a Court order. His detention relates to an ongoing investigation into allegations of fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses, as contained in a petition submitted by his cousin,” the statement read.

“Mr. Osowo has been duly served with the Court charge sheet in the presence of his legal counsel and is scheduled to appear before the Court on Monday, 16th December 2024,” the Police added.

Netizens had raised alarm on Friday that JoePaul, a critic of the government, had been arrested based on a plan to clamp down.

But, the Police averred that; “Contrary to the allegations of misconduct, the Zone 6 Police Headquarters wishes to reaffirm its commitment to professional and ethical standards in handling this case. The investigation is being conducted transparently and in accordance with due process.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the misleading and unfounded claims circulating online. The Nigeria Police remains resolute in upholding justice and ensuring fairness in all its operations.”

However, CrossRiverWatch learnt that Mr. Obi’s counsel was working to ensure his release as soon as possible amidst fears that state actors may take advantage of what seems a misdemeanor.

“Obi is in high spirits, but he lamented a few things which he expressed confidence that will be sorted out soon while we fight towards his release” Jonathan Ugbal, the Managing Editor of CrossRiverWatch said after visiting him.

“He sent a couple of messages which will be delivered and he will speak in due course as we keep demanding that he is released immediately. However, right now, all inquiries can be made through his counsel, Paul Atsu Esq,” Mr. Jonathan said.

Mr. Obi is due in Court on Monday upon the lapse of the remand order against him.
