UNICAL Department Preaches Education As The World Mark Literacy Day

By Ogar Monday

The Department of Adult and Continuing Education, University of Calabar (UNICAL) has encouraged individuals to pursue education, describing it as the key to unlocking opportunities.

The charge came during an event organized by the Department to mark the 2026 International Literacy Day.

Speaking at the event, the Head of Department, Prof. Love Asor, noted that the occasion served as a reminder that education is accessible to everyone.

Prof. Asor, who was represented by Dr. Beshel Cecilia, Head of the Cooperative Management Unit in the department, emphasized that a degree in the department can serve as a springboard to any path in life one chooses.

Dr. Helen Andong, Head of Literacy Unit in the department, described education as light and illiteracy as darkness. She stressed that there is no age limit to literacy, explaining that both the disabled and the aged can and should strive to acquire education.

She added that more awareness must be created in communities where people are yet to understand the importance of education so they can seize the opportunity to become literate.

Highlight of the day included a mini-rally through the school gate and the sharing of flyers to motorists and passerby.

International Literacy Day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 and first celebrated on September 8, 1967, to highlight the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.

The initiative was born out of UNESCO’s recognition that education is central to social and economic development, particularly after the 1965 World Conference of Ministers of Education in Tehran identified illiteracy as a major global challenge.

Since then, the day has been observed annually to raise awareness about the role of literacy in empowering individuals, communities, and societies while assessing global progress toward eradicating illiteracy
