The families of 17 deceased police personnel in Cross River State have received a total of N13.75 million in Group Life Assurance benefits, offering financial support to families left to bear the pain that followed the loss of their loved ones.
The beneficiaries received 17 cheques valued at thirteen million, seven hundred and fifty three thousand, eight hundred and eight five thousand, thirty-six Kobo (13,753,885.36) on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the Cross River State Police Command Headquarters in Calabar.
The presentation was made on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, following approval of the payments to the families of the deceased personnel, according to a statement made available to the CrossRiverWatch newsroom by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata.
Behind the cheques are families who lost fathers, husbands, brothers, sons and other loved ones whose lives were tied to a profession that often demands personal sacrifice in the service of public safety.
For the beneficiaries, the financial support cannot restore the people they lost or erase the circumstances surrounding their deaths. It nevertheless provides a measure of relief to families that may have been left to confront emotional loss alongside financial responsibilities.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, acknowledged the sacrifices of the deceased personnel, stressing that no financial payment could compensate for the loss of a human life.
He said the assistance would, however, provide meaningful support to the bereaved families while reassuring serving police personnel that the welfare of their families remains a consideration even after their death.
The payment also highlights the often-unseen cost carried by families of security personnel, who live with the risks attached to the profession and, in some cases, must continue raising children and meeting household responsibilities after losing their breadwinner or loved one.
While presenting the cheques, the Commissioner commended the beneficiaries for their resilience and recognized the sacrifices made by the deceased personnel in the course of their service to the nation.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously and assured them of the Command’s continued support.
CP Ajo also encouraged serving officers and men to remain committed to their responsibilities, urging them to uphold professionalism, courage, discipline and integrity in the discharge of their duties.
The payment followed approval by the Inspector-General of Police under the Group Life Assurance scheme, providing a financial benefit to the families of the 17 deceased personnel.
