The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Cross River State, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, has condemned in the strongest terms, the reported assault of a police officer at Watt Market, Calabar, and calls for a thorough, impartial and transparent prosecution of all persons found culpable.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on September 15, 2026, involved the alleged assault of a police constable by roadside traders and others during a confrontation around Goldie by Etim Edem Lane. The Cross River State Police Command subsequently announced the arrest of 60 suspects for screening, with four later identified for prosecution. The allegations include assaulting the officer, tearing his uniform and interfering with his police equipment.
She recognizes that “police officers, like every other citizen, are entitled to protection under the law while performing their lawful duties. Attacking a law enforcement officer undermines public safety, weakens respect for the rule of law and threatens the security of the wider community.
“However, the pursuit of justice must be guided by evidence, fairness and due process, not collective punishment or arbitrary arrests.”
The ADC guber candidate urged the police to be diligent. “I therefore call on the Cross River State Police Command to ensure that the investigation and prosecution of the alleged attackers are conducted diligently, professionally and transparently. Every suspect must be treated as innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction, while those against whom credible evidence is established should face the full consequences of the law.
“The Police Command should provide timely updates on the progress of the case, ensure that the rights of all parties are respected and demonstrate that accountability applies to everyone, including law enforcement personnel.”
She concluded: “The people of Cross River State deserve a justice system that protects police officers, safeguards citizens and upholds the rule of law without fear or favour.”
