A delegation from the campaign team of Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Cross River State, has visited the Ultimate People’s Movement (UPM) as part of efforts to seek grassroots support ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Toyo is listed as the ADC’s governorship candidate for Cross River State in the party’s 2027 lineup.
The delegation, led by Mr. Archibong Eyo, met with members of the UPM, a grassroots political movement established in 2023, during a gathering focused on the group’s political activities and its position ahead of the election.
Speaking on behalf of the campaign team, Eyo appealed to the UPM to consider supporting Toyo’s candidacy, describing the group’s grassroots presence as significant to the campaign.
He also acknowledged the group’s concerns about political engagement and representation, saying the campaign would value its support and participation in the electoral process.
“What you have done today will speak for you tomorrow,” Eyo said, while urging members of the movement to consider the Toyo campaign.
The UPM Coordinator, Duke Brownson Edet, said the movement had a presence across Cross River State and was assessing political candidates ahead of the election.
Edet said the group’s experience with politicians in previous elections had influenced its approach to political engagement. He recalled what he described as instances where promises made to communities after elections were not fulfilled.
According to him, UPM would expect any candidate seeking its support to maintain meaningful engagement with communities and grassroots organization.
“A candidate who does not see us; we will not work for such a candidate,” Edet said.
He also referred to an incident in which he said he rejected eight bags of fertilisers and N100,000, arguing that such items should not substitute for sustained engagement and representation.
Edet said the group would consider its options as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 election.
