Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke yesterday assured Cross River civil servants that their salaries will be paid despite the delays they are currently experiencing.
The state government has been unable to pay workers salaries since January and there has been growing tension and disenchantment among the workers, but in an exclusive chat with the Publisher/Editor-In-Chief of CrossRiverWatch, Agba Jalingo, at the sidelines of the PDP governors interactive session with the Press and CSOs in Lagos, the governor spoke on the delayed salaries, the security challenge posed by the scolombo boys and the impact of online media in the state.
Excerpts:
Good Afternoon Sir. Cross Riverians particularly those leaving in Calabar are worried that these group of marauders called Scolombo boys will erode the peace that Calabar is known for with their nefarious activities and residents also accuse your government of not doing enough to deal with the menace which is now eating deeper. What are you really doing about it Sir?
That is one of the things we have been fighting against for many years including the denunciation of cultism by all members of our exco but we are beginning to see not just Scolombo boys but increasing crime rate. A lot of it unfortunately is coinciding with elections. That is why every time I go out, I am campaigning strongly against violence. Our young people need not get involved in all these kinds of things. So beyond the scolombo boys we also have other cases of violence which we need to deal with. So I think that our people should be told that government understands that situation is working really hard to ensure that the trend is curbed.
When will workers salaries be paid Sir. The workers are really angry already….
They will get their salaries. There are some delays but they will. And it’s not just Cross River. I think it’s the entire federation including the federal government. But in Cross River State, given the limited resources at our disposal and the projects we have executed, we are still thinking about workers and they are going to get paid soon.
How will you access the impact of the online media on the political process in the state Sir?
I think I must commend the online media in Cross River State which you pioneered with CrossRiverWatch and CrossRiverWatch has become a platform which the people of Cross River pay attention to. You people have actually become one of the most reliable source of information in the state I must commend you and I want to add that you should always remember that the most important thing is your followership which is anchored on your objectivity. So always make sure that you are seen as objective.
