The peaceful co-existence of both Muslims and Christians in Cross River State has been used as example of how society can develop despite religion, ethnic or tribal differences.
A University Don and Guest Lecturer at the second, 13 Brigade of Nigeria Army Calabar Annual Ramadan Lecture, Ustaz, Engineer Ibrahim Ade stated this during his Lecture titled “Health and socio-economic benefits of Muslim fasting in the holy month of Ramadan and security implications in the country”.
He said his findings show that Muslims in Cross River State, particularly Calabar are living peacefully with their Christian brothers in line with the teachings of Islam.
Ustaz Ibrahim said if all Muslims copy this, the insurgence and barbaric killing in some parts of the North will be curbed.
“We pray that Muslims who are fasting in this holy month of Ramadan with their mind and in line with the teachings will bring peace and tranquility to this country”
“There will be social orderliness and respect for constituted authority if the teachings of the holy Quran are followed” he said
Bishop of Anglican Communion Diocese of Calabar, Bishop Tunde Adeleye in his short message dwelt on peace and development saying: “Unless we have peace and security, the worship of God not just in Nigeria but anywhere in the world will be hindered”
“Any where you gather and you are making attempts to worship and there is no security, honestly speaking, there will be tension, fear and restlessness. We need peace and harmony that can radiate and reflect tranquility in our environment”
“Whether you are praying in English, French, Hausa, Arabic, Efik or any language you require concentration without which that prayer cannot be properly observed”
“The peace we need in Nigeria is in our hand; unless and until we determine to have our harmonious living together without any hiding trick to kill one another, we cannot worship God together. I want us all to see this country as our own, we cannot make progress as a country except there is peace, in the political, economic and religious circle, there must be peace. We are enjoying in here because there is peace” he stated
In his opening remark, the Chief Imam of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army Central Mosque, Major Shofolahan said the 2nd annual lecture was to re-awaken the lesson of Ramadan in Muslims within Calabar and its Environment. He commended the Brigade Commander, who is a Christian, for the approval and support he gave to the program.
