The Cross River State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Asu Okang was on Saturday August 11, walked out of the venue of the announcement of the Obudu bye-election results.
Asu Okang was walked out by a mobile Police Officer on the directive of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Frankland Briyai.
The mild drama ensued few minutes before the commencement of the announcement of results. The REC was clearing up the crowded INEC Conference hall Obudu, venue.
When the REC entered the hall for the fourth time, to create more space in the about 50 capacity conference room for those with permits, Frankland said: “Please if you are here and you not an observer, party agents or journalists please leave us, if you are, show us your tag.”
At this point everyone without permit, wrapped up and left but the Youth and Sports Commissioner, Asu Okang, who was seated and discussing with the PDP agent, Chief Tony Undiandeye still sitting and looking at the REC.
Frankland asked him directly: “Sir where is your tag, if you don’t have then you’re not supposed to be here, so please leave us.”
At this point, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports was trying to talk to the REC in low tune but couldn’t get his attention as Briyai was some meters away waiting to see his tag.
After waiting for about 3 minutes and he couldn’t provide any tag, the Policemen were asked to escort him out. In the words of the REC “Police move this man out.”
Though Chief Tony was quietly concentrating on what he was doing with his phone, when a mobile Police Officer approached the Commissioner who was not willing to move, he quickly whispered something into Tony’s ears before he walked out.
Few minutes after he left, announcement of results commenced.
