Introduction
The further easing of lockdowns occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic has seen streets hitherto empty, now booming with little or no regard for guidelines issued by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC).
Flights have resumed, with more to come on Wednesday. Interstate travels continues, offices and businesses are opening up too.
But, some say the logic behind the easing of restrictions has left more questions about the idea of opening the economy despite a rise in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 unanswered by government and health authorities.
What was the idea?
Those who moot the idea that politics, rather than improved health infrastructure informed the reopening of public spaces point to a surge in confirmed cases in other countries such as South Africa, Brazil and the United States of America as examples.
With the idea of schools reopening and the reality on ground in terms of safety measures, will this lead to an increase in the number of confirmed cases?
If yes, what are the projections in numbers?
If no, is there evidence to show that the necessary preventive infrastructure has been, or will be put in place?
Also, can the health infrastructure in place cater for an increase in the number of active cases especially severe ones?
Some concerns have been raised about the alleged hypocrisy in the enforcement of guidelines, especially in the aviation industry. What is really the case?
How can the virus be stopped?
