Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Mali, Soni Abang last weekend called for drastic action from communities over the massive logging going on in Eastern Boki local government area of central Cross River State.
Abang, a former two-term Chairman of the People Democratic Party in Cross River State said the level of logging forced him to retract his support for the Iso-Bendeghe community to grade it’s access route after illegal loggers ran the community over.
He said the trees were there for a reason and warned that the consequences for the massive loss of vegetation were dire especially when the communities and State were not even benefiting from the activities.
The former diplomat who cited this as the reason he relocated out of the State to keep his sane State, disclosed this at the launching of the ‘Self Help’ Beebo/Bumaji road project in Eastern Boki last weekend, an event he said was his first public appearance in 10 years.
He warned that a smooth access road into the mountainous communities meant the arrival of loggers who were already poaching the surrounding reserves despite a difficult terrain that turned the 10.2 kilometer access road into a 90-minute drive.
