#TDWAJ EPISODE 350 – The Obubra Conflict & Communal Crisis In Cross River: Remote Causes & Sustainable Solutions

TOPIC

The Obubra Conflict And Communal Crisis In Cross River: Remote Causes And Sustainable Solutions.

INTRODUCTION

A conflict is usually defined as an argument that has become protracted. As a verb, it loosely means a clash and exists in different forms across all facets of human existence.

In Cross River State, one form of conflict that exists is communal conflict. These are conflicts between non-state groups organized along a shared communal identity, making them, like several others, products of social relations.

At least 14 of the 18 Local Government Areas in the State have active or dormant conflicts, with the most recent being between Ofatura and Ovonum communities in Obubra Local Government Area of central Cross River.

The clash has led to a resumption of conversations about conflicts in the State with several questions posed. These include, but are not limited to;

What are the immediate causes?

What are the remote causes?

Has there been a root cause analysis?

Why are they recurring?

How have they been tackled?

What was the success rate?

Who are the actors involved?

What approach has worked elsewhere?

Are there sustainable solutions?

And, who has what role to play?

These and more form the basis of this week’s ‘The Dialogue With Agba Jalingo’: “The Obubra Conflict And Communal Crisis In Cross River: Remote Causes And Sustainable Solutions.”

The Cross River State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Comrade Dan Obo, and the State Coordinator, Partners for Peace, Comrade Ukorebi Essien were guests.
