Amidst an ongoing protest by students of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) over a hike in school charges, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi has appointed one Mr. Samuel Eno Okoi as her Special Adviser on Student Affairs.
The appointment was contained in a letter addressed to Mr. Okoi who is popularly referred to as “Sammy Love,” and signed by the Varsity’s Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe.
Dated December 4, 2023 (today), the letter said Mr. Okoi is expected to bring his wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of this important assignment.
“You are to ensure that adequate attention is given to the welfare and well-being of our students through positive and constructive engagements and feedback,” the letter read adding that the appointment takes effect from today and is for a period of two years, subject to satisfactory performance.
It remains unclear whether the appointment is in response to the protests by students who have since occupied the roundabout near the UNICAL main gate that intersects Etta Agbor Street and Mary Slessor Avenue – both busy roads in Calabar.
