Reprieve came the way of a 50-year-old woman from Ini Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Eno Essien Asuquo, who has been battling with suspected breast cancer since August 2003, on Saturday courtesy of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu.
CrossRiverWatch learned that Mrs. Eno Essien, who lives in Calabar, has been going to sit by the roadside along Ekorinim by First Bank Road, near the State Ministry of Works, to see if she can grab the attention of the State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, who passes through that road to work.
But, each time the Governor is passing, security personnel rush to keep her out of view of the Governor.
But a concerned citizen and rights activist, James Ibor Esq, was driving by on Saturday morning and sighted the big sore on the woman’s breast from his car.
He approached the woman and, after their conversation, Ibor put a call across to the Minister, who was on her way from the “Utomo Obong” celebration.
The Minister rushed to the scene to see the woman. On sighting Mrs. Eno, she immediately directed that the woman be taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, for immediate medical attention, on her bill.
By the end of last Saturday, Madam Eno Essien’s sore was dressed, and preliminary treatment had started. She was admitted to the female ward of UCTH and will go for a CT scan today, Monday, while the hospital authority says the result of the scan will determine further treatment course.
