The recent heavy rainfall in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, has turned the already dilapidated roads in the LGA into impassable death traps, leaving residents and commuters stranded.
The downpour, which lasted for several hours, caused widespread flooding and damage to the road infrastructure and made it difficult for vehicles to ply the Orimekpang roads.
“I had to abandon my car and wade through the floodwaters to get to work,” said Mrs. Ekaette Bassey, a resident of Boki. “The roads are now a nightmare, and I fear for my safety every time I step out.”
The LGA has been plagued by poor road conditions for years, but the recent rainfall has exacerbated the situation. The roads are characterized by deep potholes, craters, and flooded sections, making it challenging for drivers to navigate.
The situation has also taken a toll on economic activities in the area, with goods and services unable to be transported. School attendance has also dropped, as pupils and teachers cannot reach their destinations.
Meanwhile, residents have called on the state government to intervene and provide assistance to the local government. “We need help from the state government to fix our roads,” said Mr. Otu Itam, a community leader. “We cannot continue to suffer like this.”
Residents say the situation is a stark reminder of the need for improved infrastructure and emergency preparedness in rural communities, as they only hope for a swift solution to their plight.
