Police Arrest Man With Alleged Illegal Firearm In Cross River

In line with its unwavering commitment to be proactive and intelligence-led policing, the Cross River State Police Command has apprehended a male suspect in possession of a locally fabricated firearm and live cartridges in Ikom Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest, according to the Command is a significant stride in the ongoing efforts to mop-up illegal arms and ammunition in the state.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 27, 2025, by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo said at about “08:45 hours, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), while conducting a routine stop-and-search operation along Edor–Ogoja Highway, intercepted one Ebase Akuba, from Edor Community in Ikom.”

The police said a search conducted on him led to the recovery of one locally made single-barrel gun and three (3) live cartridges in his possession. The suspect is said to have been immediately taken into custody for further investigation.

Upon interrogation, the police noted that the suspect confessed to the unlawful possession of the illegal weapon.

The suspect is still in police custody and “will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.”

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegbua, commended the professionalism of the RRS team and warned residents of the state that the Command will not allow the brandishing of unlicensed weapons in the state under his watch.

He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
