Barely two weeks into the ongoing “comprehensive and total” strike action by academic staff in Nigerian universities, the umbrella students union in the country has announced it’s decision to protest the actions of the academic staff and government starting from February 28th.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), had on February 14, embarked on its ongoing strike over failure by the federal government to honor the renegotiated agreement on the implementation of the 2009 Memorandum of Understanding between both parties.
The union had, in the previous week, spent three days sensitizing the public on why it was proceeding on another strike; the 16th of such since 1999.
And, a statement issued by the ex-officio 1 of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Afufu Anthony, says the umbrella students union “frowns at the stringent conditions on Nigerian students and views this move by the federal government as a deliberate attempt to shrink the educational system of this country at the detriment of Nigerian students.”
Comrade Afufu said public officers did not really care and the position above was, “in light of their children studying abroad and enjoying quality Education.”
The student leader said having reviewed the current situation of things pertaining to the educational system in the country where ASUU and federal government are notorious for strike actions, the union has no option than to occupy the streets nationwide from Monday, February 28th 2022 at 10:00AM.
The statement directed all Nigerian students to adhere to the directives, lock universities gates and make themselves available for the protest until their plights are met.
