The opposition Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, has called for caution and restrain from members of the political class over the controversy trailing the Cross River State Governor’s health.

The party in a statement by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Obono Obla obtained exclusively by crossriverwatch urged politicians not to allow politics, sentiments and morality to sway and influence or becloud them. The party warned the political class against creating the impression that they were happy with the unfortunate ill health of the governor.

Part of the statement reads: “We must not allow politics, sentiments and morality to sway and influence us or becloud us. We appeal to members of the political class to exercise caution and restrain and be patient. We appreciate the anxiety and interest shown in the matter by the people of Cross River State. The matter is undoubtedly a matter of public interest because the Governor is elected by the people in exercise of their choice of who governs them.

“We must not become rancorous or agitated unnecessarily because the law has foreseen such eventuality and has laid down the procedure to be followed. There is an Acting Governor already in office; that means Governor Liyel Imoke was very conscious and mindful of what the Constitution says before he took leave and traveled to the United States of America to attend to his health.

“We must respect that decision and wish him well. We must not give the impression that we are happy with his unfortunate ill health or see it as an opportunity for some people with vaulting ambition to begin to jostle for his office”.

“It is clear that it is the State House of Assembly that holds the aces where there is incontrovertible evidence that the Governor is permanently incapacitated and therefore cannot perform his constitutionally assigned functions as a result of his ill health after a competent board of medical experts have diligently and professional certified that the Governor is medically incompetent to perform the functions of his office.

“It is therefore speculative and premature to begin to guess what the next line of action is when there is no such evidence that the Governor has become permanently incapacitated and can no longer perform the functions of his office. Be that as it may, we urge the Government of Cross River State to brief us on the progress the Governor is making as we continue to pray for his speedy recovery”.
