The Economic life of Cross River State and other States in the South South, South East zones may soon witness an unprecedented boost with the assurance that President Jonathan has approved the dredging of Calabar Port.
Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Mr. Habib Abdullahi, gave this assurance when he led a delegation from the NPA to convey the message to the Acting Governor of Cross River State Efiok Cobham at the government house, Calabar.
The Nigeria Port Authority MD, said beyond the dredging, approval has also been given for the maintenance of the Calabar port to make it compete with others in the West African sub-region.
“President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the dredging and maintenance of the Calabar Port” Habib said.
He enthused that the Federal Government attached great importance to the Calabar port due to the significant role the port will serve to south south and south eastern parts of the country.
Mr. Abdullahi, lauded the Cross River State Government for the maintenance of the Calabar port by providing basic amenities and maintained.
Acting Governor Mr. Cobham, in his response said the operation of the Calabar Port is very critical to the State and the economy of the nation; adding that he looks forward with enthusiasm for the approval of the fund and dredging of the Port to be translated into action.
He pointed out that the Federal Government is emphasizing on diversification of the economy and non dependence on oil, noting that Cross River State Government has started building an economy that would not depend on oil.
It would be recalled that Several NPA Bosses including ministers of transport have in the past, repeatedly conveyed news of approval of the dredging of Calabar port from the federal government to the people of Cross River State.
The administrations of former President Obasanjo and Yaradua’s repeatedly approved the dredging of the Calabar port but not of the approvals translated to the much need action at the port.
