In line with the Ministry of Aviation Cargo Perishable Initiative, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN has said that the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, in Cross River State has been designated as one of the nation’s Agro-Perishable cargo airport.
The Director Cargo Development, FAAN Mr. Roland Ofule, disclosed this in Calabar during a courtesy call to the Acting governor of Cross River, Mr. Efiok Cobhams.
Mr. Ofule remarked that over the years, local farmers face the challenge of access to markets, reasoning that the initiative will calm their fears and encourage them to be more productive.
He added that the use of the airport will boost the economy of the state and nation at large and stressed on the need for farmers to be properly educated on this initiative.
The Acting governor of Cross River expressed appreciation for the choice to use the Calabar airport, adding that it would enable aircraft with bigger tonnage ply the airport without hitch as well as enable the airport function optimally to meet up its new status as a cargo airport.
