A 20 year old boy, Godwin Odu has been arrested by the police in Calabar for allegedly stabbing Boniface Odinaka, a student of Army Day Secondary School, 13 Amphibious Brigade, Eburutu Barracks, Calabar to death.
Odinaka who is the Labor Prefect of the school was attacked and killed after school hours by one Godwin Odu during a fight for confiscating the sandals of another student, Francis Etim who engaged the services of Odu his friend and alleged cultist to commit the crime.
Odu who is from Akwa Ibom State, is currently a guest of the Cross River State Criminal Investigation Department, (SCID) at Diamond Hill State Police Headquarters, Calabar.
When CrossRiverWatch visited the Police Headquarters to see the accused and ask why he killed Odinaka, Odu said his friend Francis Etim asked him to assist him recover a pair of sandals which Odinaka had seized from him over alleged improper dressing.
When asked how the crime was perpetrated, Mr. Etim who hired Odinaka to commit the crime said both of them laid ambush for Odinaka at the school gate waiting for closing hour when students will be returning home.
Odu then added that, “Etim spotted the Labor Prefect from a distance and pointed at him saying: That is the boy! And we went after him”
He said when they accosted Odinaka, he asked him who gave him the guts to seize his friend’s sandals.
In his statement at the Homicide Unit of the State CID, Odu confirmed that he attacked Odinaka from the rear and as the SSS 11 boy struggled to free himself, it resulted to a fight which culminated in Odinaka’s death.
While fielding questions from the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Homicide, Mr. Joseph Inuyashe (DSP), Odu claimed that “The boy (Odinaka) is the cause of everything that has brought me here. My friend Aboy, (real name Francis Etim), came from school and told me that one senior student has seized his sandals.
“Aboy is friend and live in the same block at Eburutu Barracks, so I told him that lets wait by the road side, so that he will show me the person. As the school dismissed, Aboy told me it is Boniface, so I went to him and asked him why he seized my friend’s sandals; that is when we started fighting”.
Odu confessed that he gripped the Labor Prefect from the back, and as Boniface turned facing him, he had to stab him on the chest, saying “I did not intend to kill him.”
Minutes after Odinaka was killed, Etim took to his heels and fled the area, but was later arrested.
Odu who was identified as a dropout, said he attended Government Technical school Ikot Nsa, Calabar and abandoned his studies as “some bad boys were after me.”
He pleaded that he was still a minor, claiming he was 14 years old, but when asked the year he was born, his years in primary and secondary school, he later said he was 20 years old.
Mr. Inuyashe (DSP), said the state Government frowns at cultism and other nefarious acts, promising that Odu will be promptly charged to Court since he has admitted killing the victim.
When our correspondent visited the office of the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), he was told that the acting police image maker, Mr. Hogan Bassey was out on official duty with the Commissioner of Police, just as efforts to reach him on phone did not yield any result. His GSM line rang several times without any response.
