One of the persons thought to be the next in line of the so-called ‘Lagos Accord’, has said that the People’s Democratic Party in Cross River State functions as one family and the party has zoned the 2015 Governorship slot in the state to the northern Senatorial District to ensure equity and political power balance amongst the three senatorial districts of the state.
Mr. Gershom Bassey, the Chairman of Cross River State Water Board who is from the Southern Senatorial District revealed this to CrossRiverWatch on Tuesday at the Channel View Hotel minutes after the PDP Fund Raising Dinner for the 2013 local Government Elections held at the Mary Ekpiken Hall.
He declared that the statement by Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke that the next senatorial district to occupy the number one position in the state should be the north is acceptable to all party members amongst which he is one.
“We have our thinking in the state and that thought is that power should rotate to the north and I am not planning to contest so I wonder where you got your rumour from that I am planning to run for the post of governor”.
He stated that the PDP is one solid family in the state and there are no fears that some members of the party would move to the new PDP.
“We are one solid family here and we have no fears that any one from our ranks is contemplating or would want to go a separate direction. Even at that, there are strong reconciliation efforts and our governor is strongly working with others towards achieving that; so no fears whatsoever.”
Mr. Bassey who also served as the Chairman of the Fund Rasing Dinner said he is confident that the PDP will remain one solid family in the face of the current travails plaguing the party because what unites the party is stronger than what seems to be dividing it.
Mr. Gershom Bassey who described Senator Liyel Imoke’s performance in the state as excellent said the PDP would not have difficulty winning the election because the party has worked hard and deserves victory.
“We are not leaving anything to chance; even if the APC does not contest as you say, there are other parties contesting so we have to make sure we put up our best efforts”.
On the insinuation that current chairmen in the state who seemed to be aggrieved that the party did not allow them to return to office for second tenure would constitute a stumbling block to the party during the election, Mr. Bassey said there are no such fears because their anger has since died off and as faithful party members, they will act in unison with the rest of the members to bring victory to the PDP.
“You heard Dr Emil Inyang who spoke on behalf of the serving chairmen that they would take the candidates village to village and ward to ward during the campaign”.
