The contingent of the University of Calabar, UNICAL that left the state on the 12th February, 2014 to Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU Ile-Ife, Osun State for the Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA is expected back in the state today with a total haul of seven medals.
The competition which came to a close on the 22nd February, 2014 has been described as a necessary step in boosting sporting activities amongst students.
This was made known via a phone conversation with the Students’ Union Government, SUG Director of Sports, Comrade Inang Ruth Essien immediately after the football finals in Ile-Ife where Team Unical emerged second best.
She CrossRiverWatch that “We lost 0 – 1 to the host team because of home advantage. Our goal keeper emerged as the best keeper of the tournament but he wasn’t recognized simply because we did not win. They only recognized the best player because he’s from the home team”.
Comrade Inang further disclosed that Team Unical garnered a total of seven medals in different sports. She said: “In Judo we won two gold medals, athletics one while in badminton and table tennis we took bronze and silver in chess and football”.
